We strongly advise against uploading AI-Generated Music to SURF
A large variety of tracks are uploaded to the SURF platform on a regular basis, including tracks with AI-generated vocals, AI-transformed vocals, and tracks entirely generated by AI. With all tracks uploaded to the marketplace, creators must own 100% of the rights to a track, and credit must be properly given to all contributors if the rights are split. If AI is used to generate vocals for an existing instrumental track, creators must be able to provide proof that they own 100% of the rights to the generated vocals.
Furthermore, if a music label chooses to move forward with a track, it is standard procedure for creators to be able to provide all of the vocal and instrumental stems used in a project. Generative AI programs do not provide an effective means of separating stems, meaning music labels ultimately cannot use those tracks.
In the age of AI, many new services (including SURF itself) are ethically used by musicians to enhance productivity and production quality. However, generative AI that is used to completely bypass an important part of the creative process unfortunately causes many logistical issues and is a disservice to the greater community. Therefore, while creators may use generative AI for reference and inspiration, we strongly encourage creators to refrain from submitting tracks that include fully AI-generated components.
